Ques. 1AIPMT 2005

A person is undergoing prolonged fasting. His urine will be found to contain abnormal quantities of

  1. fats
  2. amino acids
  3. glucose
  4. ketones.

Answer

(4) ketones.

Solution

During prolonged fasting, the glycogen reserve is used up and the body oxidises stored fats for energy.

The excess acetyl CoA from fatty acid breakdown in the liver forms ketone bodies (acetoacetic acid, β-hydroxybutyric acid, acetone), so their level in blood rises and the excess is excreted in urine (ketonuria).

As per NCERT, the presence of ketone bodies in urine (ketonuria) is detected by urine analysis.

∴ The urine will contain abnormal quantities of ketones.
