Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 21 January (Morning Shift)

Let a1 = 1 and for n 1, an+1 = 12an + n2 - 2n - 1n2(n + 1)2. Then | n=1 (an - 2n2 ) | is equal to .

Answer

2

Solution

2(n + 1)2 - 1n2 = 2n2 - (n + 1)2n2(n + 1)2 = n2 - 2n - 1n2(n + 1)2, the recurrence becomes

an+1 = 12an + 2(n + 1)2 - 1n2

an+1 - 2(n + 1)2 = 12 (an - 2n2 )

Let bn = an - 2n2; then bn+1 = 12bn with b1 = 1 - 2 = -1, so bn is a G.P. with first term -1 and common ratio 12, and

n=1 bn = -11 - 12 = -2

| n=1 (an - 2n2 ) | = |-2| = 2
