Ques. 1AIPMT 2015 (Cancelled)

The reaction, [figure] is called

  1. Etard reaction
  2. Gattermann-Koch reaction
  3. Williamson synthesis
  4. Williamson continuous etherification process

Answer

(3) Williamson synthesis

Solution

Sodium tert-butoxide reacts with ethyl chloride by SN2 attack of the alkoxide ion on the primary alkyl halide:

(CH3)3C-O + CH3CH2-Cl (CH3)3C-O-CH2CH3 + Cl

As per NCERT, the reaction of an alkyl halide with sodium alkoxide to give an ether is called Williamson synthesis; better results are obtained when the alkyl halide is primary.
