Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 2 April (Morning Shift)

Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I: oxidising power of halogens (standard reduction potentials) decreases down the group:

F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2

A halogen of higher oxidising power displaces the halide ion of lower oxidising power; this is the basis of the layer test ∴ Statement I is true.

Statement II: chlorine water oxidises Br- / I-:

Cl2 + 2Br- 2Cl- + Br2 (orange-brown in the organic layer)

Cl2 + 2I- 2Cl- + I2 (violet in the organic layer)

The halogen is displaced from its halide by Cl2 ⇒ a (halogen) displacement redox reaction ∴ Statement II is true.
