Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

A drop of each of the following, is placed separately on four slides. Which of them will not coagulate?

  1. Blood serum
  2. Sample from the thoracic duct of lymphatic system
  3. Whole blood from pulmonary vein
  4. Blood plasma

Answer

(1) Blood serum

Solution

As per NCERT, plasma without the clotting factors is called serum.

Coagulation needs fibrinogen, which is converted into fibrin threads by thrombin.

Whole blood, plasma and lymph (from the thoracic duct) all contain fibrinogen and clotting factors, so they can clot.

∴ Blood serum, which lacks fibrinogen and clotting factors, will not coagulate.
