Ques. 1AIPMT 2010 (Mains)

How many bridging oxygen atoms are present in P4O10?

  1. 6
  2. 4
  3. 2
  4. 5

Answer

(1) 6

Solution

In P4O10 the four P atoms form a tetrahedron; each of its 6 edges carries one P–O–P bridging oxygen.

Each P also carries one terminal P=O oxygen ⇒ 4 terminal oxygens.

Total = 6 + 4 = 10 ✓

∴ Bridging oxygen atoms = 6
