Ques. 1AIPMT 2009

Which one of the following is the most likely root cause why menstruation is not taking place in regularly cycling human female?

  1. Retention of well-developed corpus luteum
  2. Maintenance of high concentration of sex hormones in the blood stream
  3. Maintenance of the hypertrophical endometrial lining
  4. Fertilisation of the ovum

Answer

(2) Maintenance of high concentration of sex hormones in the blood stream

Solution

As per NCERT, menstruation occurs only when the ovum is not fertilised: the corpus luteum degenerates, the level of progesterone falls and the endometrium disintegrates.

⇒ The endometrium is maintained only as long as the blood levels of the ovarian sex hormones (progesterone and oestrogen) remain high.

∴ The immediate (root) cause that prevents menstruation is the maintenance of a high concentration of sex hormones in the blood stream; a retained corpus luteum and a thick endometrium are only the source and the effect of these hormones.
