Ques. 1AIPMT 2009

There is no DNA in

  1. mature RBCs
  2. a mature spermatozoan
  3. hair root
  4. an enucleated ovum.

Answer

(1) mature RBCs

Solution

As per NCERT, RBCs of most mammals are devoid of nucleus and are biconcave in shape. Mature human RBCs also lack mitochondria, so they have neither nuclear nor mitochondrial DNA.

A mature spermatozoan has a haploid nucleus in its head, and hair-root cells are living nucleated cells. An enucleated ovum has lost its nucleus but still contains mitochondria with mitochondrial DNA.

∴ DNA is completely absent in mature RBCs.
