Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 28 January (Evening Shift)

Which of the following phenomena cannot be explained by wave theory of light?

  1. Refraction of light
  2. Reflection of light
  3. Diffraction of light
  4. Compton effect

Answer

(4) Compton effect

Solution

Reflection, refraction and diffraction of light are all explained by the wave theory (Huygens principle and superposition of waves).

Compton effect: X-rays scattered by electrons show an increase in wavelength that depends on the scattering angle. It is explained only by treating radiation as photons (energy hν, momentum h ) colliding with electrons, i.e. by the particle nature of light.

The Compton effect cannot be explained by the wave theory.
