Ques. 1AIPMT 2012 (Prelims)

Which part of the human ear plays no role in hearing as such but is otherwise very much required?

  1. Eustachian tube
  2. Organ of Corti
  3. Vestibular apparatus
  4. Ear ossicles

Answer

(3) Vestibular apparatus

Solution

⇒ Ear ossicles increase the efficiency of transmission of sound waves to the inner ear, and the organ of Corti contains the hair cells that act as auditory receptors; both take part in hearing.

⇒ The Eustachian tube equalises air pressure on both sides of the ear drum, which helps the ear drum to vibrate properly.

∵ As per NCERT, the vestibular apparatus (three semicircular canals and the otolith organ — saccule and utricle) with its cristae and maculae is responsible for maintenance of balance of the body and posture.

∴ The vestibular apparatus plays no role in hearing but is very much required for balance.
