Ques. 1NEET 2013

Select the wrong statement

  1. In Oomycetes, female gamete is smaller and motile, while male gamete is larger and non-motile.
  2. Chlamydomonas exhibits both isogamy and anisogamy and Fucus shows oogamy.
  3. Isogametes are similar in structure, function and behaviour.
  4. Anisogametes differ either in structure, function or behaviour.

Answer

(1) In Oomycetes, female gamete is smaller and motile, while male gamete is larger and non-motile.

Solution

As per NCERT, fusion of a large, non-motile (static) female gamete with a smaller, motile male gamete is termed oogamous.

⇒ Oomycetes (e.g. Albugo) are oogamous: the female gamete (egg in the oogonium) is larger and non-motile, while the male gamete is smaller.

∴ Statement (1) reverses the sizes and motility — it is wrong.

∵ Chlamydomonas shows isogamy and anisogamy, Fucus shows oogamy, isogametes are similar and anisogametes are dissimilar, statements (2), (3) and (4) are correct.
