Ques. 1AIPMT 2004

Certain characteristic demographic features of developing countries are -

  1. High fertility, low or rapidly falling mortality rate, rapid population growth and a very young age distribution
  2. High mortality, high density, uneven population growth and a very old age distribution
  3. High fertility, high density, rapidly rising mortality rate and very young age distribution
  4. High infant mortality, low fertility, uneven population growth and a very young age distribution

Answer

(1) High fertility, low or rapidly falling mortality rate, rapid population growth and a very young age distribution

Solution

In developing countries the birth rate (fertility) is high, while the death rate is low or falling rapidly because of better medical care, so the population grows rapidly.

A large proportion of the population is pre-reproductive, so the age pyramid has a broad base (triangular), showing an expanding, very young population.

As per NCERT, a triangular age pyramid represents an expanding (growing) population.
