Ques. 1AIPMT 2002

The growth curve of bacterial population in lab is plotted against time. What will be the shape of graph?

  1. Sigmoid
  2. Hyperbolic
  3. Ascending straight line
  4. Descending straight line

Answer

(2) Hyperbolic

Solution

As per NCERT, when resources (food and space) are unlimited, a population grows in an exponential (geometric) fashion:

dNdt = rN

Nt = N0 ert

∵ In a laboratory culture the bacteria are supplied with ample nutrients and space, the number of cells keeps multiplying with time, so a plot of population size against time gives a J-shaped curve that rises ever more steeply.

∴ The shape of the graph is the J-shaped (hyperbolic) curve.
