Ques. 1AIPMT 2003

In Drosophila, the sex is determined by:

  1. X and Y chromosomes
  2. Whether the egg is fertilized or develops parthenogenetically
  3. The ratio of number of X-chromosomes to the sets of autosomes
  4. The ratio of pairs of X-chromosomes to the pairs of autosomes

Answer

(4) The ratio of pairs of X-chromosomes to the pairs of autosomes

Solution

In Drosophila the Y chromosome does not decide sex (XO flies are male, XXY flies are female); sex is decided by the genic balance between the X chromosomes and the autosomes (Bridges).

Normal female: one pair of X chromosomes with the pairs of autosomes ⇒ X : A = 2X : 2A = 1.0

Normal male: only half a pair of X with the same pairs of autosomes ⇒ X : A = 1X : 2A = 0.5

∴ Sex depends on the ratio of X chromosomes (pairs) to autosomes (pairs/sets): ratio 1.0 → female, 0.5 → male, between them → intersex.
