Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Answer
(1) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Solution
Statement I: pressure in a fluid at rest exists at every point inside the fluid, not only on a solid surface in contact with it. At any point in a still fluid the pressure acts equally in all directions (Pascal's law), and it acts on any surface (real or imaginary) drawn inside the fluid, so Statement I is false.
Statement II: a molecule on the surface has neighbours only on one side, so it has fewer attractive bonds than a molecule in the interior. Surface molecules therefore have extra (excess) potential energy compared with interior molecules, which is why the liquid tends to reduce its surface area; this extra energy per unit area appears as surface tension (surface energy). Hence Statement II is true.
