Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 5 April (Evening Shift)

Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  4. Statement I is correct but Statement II is false

Answer

(4) Statement I is correct but Statement II is false

Solution

Statement I: Na (186 pm) → Na+ (102 pm)

∵ the cation loses the whole 3s shell and Zeff per electron increases ⇒ Statement I is true

Statement II: anions are larger than their atoms, e.g. F (64 pm) → F- (133 pm)

∵ the extra electron lowers Zeff per electron ⇒ Statement II is false

Answer: (4)
