In which of the following, notochord is present in embryonic stage?

  1. All chordates
  2. Some chordates
  3. Vertebrates
  4. Non-chordates

Answer

(1) All chordates

Solution

As per NCERT, animals of phylum Chordata are fundamentally characterised by the presence of a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord and paired pharyngeal gill slits.

In vertebrates the notochord is present only during the embryonic stage and is replaced by a cartilaginous or bony vertebral column in the adult, while non-chordates have no notochord at all.

∴ Notochord is present in the embryonic stage of all chordates.
