Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

Which of the following is true for Golden rice?

  1. It is drought tolerant, developed using Agrobacterium vector.
  2. It has yellow grains, because of a gene introduced from a primitive variety of rice.
  3. It is Vitamin A enriched, with a gene from daffodil.
  4. It is pest resistant, with a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis.

Answer

(3) It is Vitamin A enriched, with a gene from daffodil.

Solution

As per NCERT, genetically modified crops can have enhanced nutritional value, e.g., Vitamin A enriched rice (Golden rice).

Golden rice carries genes for -carotene (provitamin A) synthesis in the endosperm; the phytoene synthase gene was taken from daffodil (and the carotene desaturase gene from the bacterium Erwinia uredovora). This -carotene gives the grains their golden-yellow colour, and the gene is not from a primitive rice variety.

Pest resistance with a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis describes Bt crops, not Golden rice, and Golden rice is not a drought-tolerant variety.

∴ Golden rice is Vitamin A enriched, with a gene from daffodil.
