Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 28 January (Morning Shift)

The mean and variance of 10 observations are 9 and 34.2, respectively. If 8 of these observations are 2, 3, 5, 10, 11, 13, 15, 21, then the mean deviation about the median of all the 10 observations is

  1. 7
  2. 4
  3. 5
  4. 6

Answer

(3) 5

Solution

Let the other two observations be a and b.

The sum is 10 × 9 = 90 and the 8 given add to 80, so a + b = 10.

xi210 - 92 = 34.2 xi2 = 1152

The squares of the 8 given add to 4 + 9 + 25 + 100 + 121 + 169 + 225 + 441 = 1094, so

a2 + b2 = 58

ab = (a + b)2 - (a2 + b2)2 = 100 - 582 = 21

Hence a, b = 3, 7, and the data in order are 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, 15, 21.

Median = 7 + 102 = 8.5

|xi - 8.5| = 6.5 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 3.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 2.5 + 4.5 + 6.5 + 12.5 = 50

M.D. about median = 5010 = 5
