Ques. 1NEET 2017

Anaphase Promoting Complex (APC) is a protein degradation machinery necessary for proper mitosis of animal cell. If APC is defective in a human cell, which of the following is expected to occur?

  1. Chromosomes will be fragmented.
  2. Chromosomes will not segregate.
  3. Recombination of chromosome arms will occur.
  4. Chromosomes will not condense.

Answer

(2) Chromosomes will not segregate.

Solution

APC (a ubiquitin ligase) marks securin for degradation; this frees the enzyme separase, which cleaves the cohesin holding the sister chromatids together.

⇒ As per NCERT, at the onset of anaphase the centromeres split and the chromatids separate and move to opposite poles.

∵ A defective APC cannot trigger this separation, the cell remains arrested at metaphase.

∴ The chromosomes will not segregate.

Answer: (2)
