NEET 2013MCQEasy📈 Topic in 12% papers+4−1
Ques. 1NEET 2013

Which of the metabolites is common to respiration-mediated breakdown of fats, carbohydrates and proteins?

  1. Pyruvic acid
  2. Acetyl CoA
  3. Glucose-6-phosphate
  4. Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate

Answer

(2) Acetyl CoA

Solution

As per NCERT (amphibolic pathway), carbohydrates are broken down to glucose → pyruvic acid → acetyl CoA; fats are broken down to glycerol and fatty acids, and the fatty acids are degraded to acetyl CoA; proteins are broken down to amino acids, which (after deamination) enter as pyruvic acid, acetyl CoA or Krebs cycle intermediates.

∵ Fatty acids enter respiration directly as acetyl CoA (not via pyruvic acid or the hexose phosphates),

∴ acetyl CoA is the metabolite common to the breakdown of all three.
