Ques. 1NEET 2018

Calcium is important in skeletal muscle contraction because it

  1. detaches the myosin head from the actin filament
  2. binds to troponin to remove the masking of active sites on actin for myosin
  3. prevents the formation of bonds between the myosin cross bridges and the actin filament
  4. activates the myosin ATPase by binding to it

Answer

(2) binds to troponin to remove the masking of active sites on actin for myosin

Solution

A neural signal releases Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum into the sarcoplasm. As per NCERT, the increase in Ca2+ level leads to the binding of calcium with a subunit of troponin on actin filaments and thereby removes the masking of active sites for myosin.

The myosin head then binds to the exposed active sites on actin, forming a cross bridge.
