Ques. 1AIPMT 2014

Which one of the following is an example of thermosetting polymer?

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(4) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, thermosetting polymers are cross-linked or heavily branched molecules which, on heating, undergo extensive cross-linking in moulds and become infusible; they cannot be reused. Some common examples are bakelite and urea-formaldehyde resins.

⇒ (1) is neoprene (polychloroprene), an elastomer.

⇒ (2) is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a thermoplastic polymer.

⇒ (3) is nylon 6,6, a fibre.

⇒ (4) is the phenol–formaldehyde polymer (novolac), which on heating with formaldehyde forms the cross-linked thermosetting polymer bakelite.

∴ The thermosetting polymer is the phenol–formaldehyde polymer (bakelite).
