Ques. 1NEET 2018

A mixture of 2.3 g formic acid and 4.5 g oxalic acid is treated with conc. H2SO4. The evolved gaseous mixture is passed through KOH pellets. Weight (in g) of the remaining product at STP will be

  1. 1.4
  2. 3.0
  3. 2.8
  4. 4.4

Answer

(3) 2.8

Solution

Conc. H2SO4 dehydrates both acids:

HCOOH conc. H2SO4 CO + H2O

H2C2O4 conc. H2SO4 CO + CO2 + H2O

Moles of HCOOH = 2.346 = 0.05 mol ⇒ CO formed = 0.05 mol

Moles of H2C2O4 = 4.590 = 0.05 mol ⇒ CO = 0.05 mol and CO2 = 0.05 mol

∵ KOH pellets absorb CO2 (acidic gas) and moisture, only CO remains.

∴ Total CO = 0.05 + 0.05 = 0.1 mol

Mass of CO = 0.1 28

= 2.8 g
