Damage to thymus in a child may lead to

  1. A reduction in stem cell production
  2. Loss of cell mediated immunity
  3. A reduction in haemoglobin content of blood
  4. Loss of antibody mediated immunity

Answer

(2) Loss of cell mediated immunity

Solution

As per NCERT, the thymus is a primary lymphoid organ in which immature lymphocytes differentiate into antigen-sensitive T-lymphocytes.

T-lymphocytes are responsible for cell-mediated immunity (CMI), whereas antibody-mediated (humoral) immunity is due to B-lymphocytes, which mature in the bone marrow.

∴ Damage to the thymus in a child leads to loss of cell mediated immunity.
