Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

The d electron configurations of Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe2+ and Ni2+ are 3d4, 3d5, 3d6 and 3d8 respectively. Which one of the following aqua complexes will exhibit the minimum paramagnetic behaviour? (At. No. Cr = 24, Mn = 25, Fe = 26, Ni = 28)

  1. [Fe(H2O)6]2+
  2. [Ni(H2O)6]2+
  3. [Cr(H2O)6]2+
  4. [Mn(H2O)6]2+

Answer

(2) [Ni(H2O)6]2+

Solution

H2O is a weak field ligand ⇒ no pairing beyond Hund's rule (high spin).

Unpaired electrons: Cr2+ (3d4) = 4, Mn2+ (3d5) = 5, Fe2+ (3d6) = 4, Ni2+ (3d8) = 2

= n(n+2) BM is least for the smallest n.

∴ [Ni(H2O)6]2+ ( = 8 = 2.83 BM) is the least paramagnetic.
