Ques. 1AIPMT 2001

Which of the following give positive Fehling solution test?

  1. Sucrose
  2. Glucose
  3. Fats
  4. Protein

Answer

(2) Glucose

Solution

Fehling solution is reduced (red precipitate of Cu2O) only by reducing sugars, which have a free aldehyde or ketone group.

Glucose has a free –CHO group, so it is a reducing sugar and gives a positive test.

As per NCERT, in sucrose the reducing groups of glucose and fructose are involved in the glycosidic bond, so sucrose is a non-reducing sugar, and fats and proteins have no free aldehyde group.

Answer: (2)
