Ques. 1NEET 2013 (Karnataka)

One of the following is not a method of contraception. Which one?

  1. Pills of a combination of oxytocin and vasopressin
  2. Lippes loop
  3. Condoms
  4. Tubectomy

Answer

(1) Pills of a combination of oxytocin and vasopressin

Solution

As per NCERT, contraceptive methods include barrier methods (condoms), IUDs (non-medicated IUDs such as Lippes loop), oral pills and surgical methods (vasectomy, tubectomy).

Oral contraceptive pills contain progestogens or progestogen–estrogen combinations, which inhibit ovulation and implantation.

Oxytocin and vasopressin, however, are posterior pituitary hormones (uterine contraction / milk ejection and water reabsorption), so they are not used for contraception.

∴ Pills of a combination of oxytocin and vasopressin is not a method of contraception.
