Ques. 1AIPMT 2005

Electrolytic reduction of nitrobenzene in weakly acidic medium gives

  1. N-phenylhydroxylamine
  2. nitrosobenzene
  3. aniline
  4. p-hydroxyaniline

Answer

(3) aniline

Solution

In electrolytic reduction, nitrobenzene is reduced stepwise: C6H5NO2 C6H5NO C6H5NHOH C6H5NH2

In weakly acidic medium the reduction goes to completion, so aniline is obtained; in strongly acidic medium, the N-phenylhydroxylamine formed in between rearranges to p-aminophenol (p-hydroxyaniline).

The product in weakly acidic medium is aniline.
