Ques. 1AIPMT 2015 (Cancelled)

Which one of the following electrolytes has the same value of van't Hoff factor (i) as that of Al2(SO4)3 (if all are 100% ionised)?

  1. Al(NO3)3
  2. K4[Fe(CN)6]
  3. K2SO4
  4. K3[Fe(CN)6]

Answer

(2) K4[Fe(CN)6]

Solution

For 100% ionisation, i = total number of ions given by one formula unit.

Al2(SO4)3 2Al3+ + 3SO42- ⇒ i = 5

(1) Al(NO3)3 Al3+ + 3NO3- ⇒ i = 4

(2) K4[Fe(CN)6] 4K+ + [Fe(CN)6]4- ⇒ i = 5

(3) K2SO4 2K+ + SO42- ⇒ i = 3

(4) K3[Fe(CN)6] 3K+ + [Fe(CN)6]3- ⇒ i = 4

∴ K4[Fe(CN)6] has the same van't Hoff factor (i = 5).
