Ques. 1NEET 2017

Which of the following reactions is appropriate for converting acetamide to methanamine?

  1. Hoffmann hypobromamide reaction
  2. Stephen's reaction
  3. Gabriel phthalimide synthesis
  4. Carbylamine reaction

Answer

(1) Hoffmann hypobromamide reaction

Solution

Acetamide (CH3CONH2, 2 C) → methanamine (CH3NH2, 1 C): one carbon atom less.

As per NCERT, Hoffmann bromamide degradation converts an amide into a primary amine with one carbon atom less than the amide:

CH3CONH2 + Br2 + 4NaOH CH3NH2 + Na2CO3 + 2NaBr + 2H2O

Stephen's reaction gives aldehydes from nitriles, Gabriel synthesis gives amines from alkyl halides, and the carbylamine reaction gives isocyanides.

The correct statement regarding the basicity of arylamines is

  1. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines because of aryl group
  2. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines, because the nitrogen atom in arylamines is sp-hybridised
  3. arylamines are generally less basic than alkylamines because the nitrogen lone-pair electrons are delocalised by interaction with the aromatic ring -electron system
  4. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines because the nitrogen lone-pair electrons are not delocalised by interaction with the aromatic ring -electron system.
