Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 6 April (Morning Shift)

A data consists of 20 observations x1, x2, , x20. If i=120 (xi+5 )2=2500 and i=120 (xi-5 )2=100, then the ratio of mean to standard deviation of this data is :

  1. 2 : 1
  2. 3 : 1
  3. 3 : 2
  4. 4 : 1

Answer

(2) 3 : 1

Solution

(xi + 5 )2 = xi2 + 10 xi + 20 25 = 2500

xi2 + 10 xi = 2000 … (i)

(xi - 5 )2 = xi2 - 10 xi + 500 = 100

xi2 - 10 xi = -400 … (ii)

Subtracting, (i) - (ii): 20 xi = 2400 xi = 120, so the mean is x = 12020 = 6.

Adding, (i) + (ii): 2 xi2 = 1600 xi2 = 800, so

2 = xi220 - x2 = 40 - 36 = 4 = 2

Mean : S.D. = 6 : 2 = 3 : 1

Answer: (2)
