Ques. 1AIPMT 2004

In glycolysis, during oxidation electrons are removed by

  1. ATP
  2. glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate
  3. NAD+
  4. molecular oxygen.

Answer

(3) NAD+

Solution

As per NCERT, in glycolysis 3-phosphoglyceraldehyde (PGAL) is oxidised and phosphorylated to 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid (BPGA).

⇒ In this step two redox-equivalents (electrons with H+) are removed from PGAL and transferred to NAD+.

NAD+ + 2e- + 2H+ NADH + H+

∵ Glycolysis is anaerobic, molecular oxygen is not the electron acceptor; glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate is the substrate that loses electrons.

∴ Electrons are removed by NAD+.
