Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

The living organisms can be unexceptionally distinguished from the non-living things on the basis of their ability for

  1. interaction with the environment and progressive evolution
  2. reproduction
  3. growth and movement
  4. responsiveness to touch

Answer

(1) interaction with the environment and progressive evolution

Solution

As per NCERT, growth and reproduction cannot be taken as defining properties of living organisms:

∵ non-living objects (mountains, sand mounds) also 'grow' by accumulation of material on the surface, and many organisms (mules, sterile worker bees, infertile human couples) do not reproduce ⇒ (2) and (3) are not exceptionless.

∵ Not every organism responds to touch (only some plants, e.g. Mimosa, and animals do) ⇒ (4) is wrong.

∵ All living organisms sense and interact with their environment (consciousness) and all of them have evolved and continue to evolve ⇒ these two together distinguish every living organism from non-living things.

Two plants can be conclusively said to belong to the same species if they

  1. have more than 90 percent similar genes
  2. look similar and possess identical secondary metabolites
  3. have same number of chromosomes
  4. can reproduce freely with each other and form seeds

  2. Atomic level
  3. Organismic level
  4. Submicroscopic molecular level
Ques. 4AIPMT 2003

Species are considered as

  1. real basic units of classification
  2. the lowest units of classification
  3. artificial concept of human mind which cannot be defined in absolute terms
  4. real units of classification devised by taxonomists.
Ques. 5AIPMT 2003

Biosystematics aims at

  1. the classification of organisms based on broad morphological characters
  2. delimiting various taxa of organisms and establishing their relationships
  3. the classification of organisms based on their evolutionary history and establishing their phylogeny on the totality of various parameters from all fields of studies
  4. identification and arrangement of organisms on the basis of their cytological characteristics.
Ques. 6AIPMT 2003

Nicotiana sylvestris flowers only during long days and N. tabacum flowers only during short days. If raised in the laboratory under different photoperiods, they can be induced to flower at the same time and can be cross-fertilized to produce self-fertile offspring. What is the best reason for considering N. sylvestris and N. tabacum to be separate species?

  1. They cannot interbreed in nature
  2. They are reproductively distinct
  3. They are physiologically distinct
  4. They are morphologically distinct
Ques. 7AIPMT 2002

What is true for individuals of same species ?

  2. Live in different habitat
  3. Interbreeding
  4. Live in same niche
