Ques. 1AIPMT 2014

Which property of colloids is not dependent on the charge on colloidal particles?

  1. Coagulation
  2. Electrophoresis
  3. Electro-osmosis
  4. Tyndall effect

Answer

(4) Tyndall effect

Solution

Coagulation depends on charge, because the charge on colloidal particles is neutralised by oppositely charged ions.

Electrophoresis, the movement of charged colloidal particles towards an electrode under an electric field, also depends on charge, and so does electro-osmosis, the movement of the dispersion medium when the movement of the charged particles is prevented.

As per NCERT, the Tyndall effect is due to the fact that colloidal particles scatter light in all directions; it is an optical property that depends only on the size of the particles.

∴ The Tyndall effect does not depend on the charge on colloidal particles.
