Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

Which of the following is a flowering plant with nodules containing filamentous nitrogen-fixing micro-organism?

  1. Crotalaria juncea
  2. Cycas revoluta
  3. Cicer arietinum
  4. Casuarina equisetifolia

Answer

(4) Casuarina equisetifolia

Solution

As per NCERT, Frankia, a filamentous (actinomycete) nitrogen-fixing micro-organism, produces nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots of the non-leguminous flowering plant Alnus; similar actinorhizal nodules with Frankia are formed on the roots of Casuarina equisetifolia ⇒ (4).

∵ Crotalaria juncea and Cicer arietinum are legumes whose nodules contain the rod-shaped bacterium Rhizobium (not filamentous) ⇒ (1), (3) are wrong.

∵ Cycas revoluta is a gymnosperm (not a flowering plant) whose coralloid roots contain cyanobacteria ⇒ (2) is wrong.
