Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

In some plants, the female gamete develops into embryo without fertilization. This phenomenon is known as :

  1. Syngamy
  2. Parthenocarpy
  3. Parthenogenesis
  4. Autogamy

Answer

(3) Parthenogenesis

Solution

As per NCERT, in several organisms the female gamete undergoes development to form a new organism without fertilisation; this phenomenon is called parthenogenesis.

⇒ Syngamy is fusion of gametes; parthenocarpy is formation of fruit without fertilisation; autogamy is transfer of pollen to the stigma of the same flower.

∴ Development of the female gamete into an embryo without fertilisation is parthenogenesis.
