Ques. 1NEET 2013

Perisperm differs from endosperm in

  1. being a diploid tissue
  2. its formation by fusion of secondary nucleus with several sperms
  3. being a haploid tissue
  4. having no reserve food.

Answer

(1) being a diploid tissue

Solution

As per NCERT, in some seeds such as black pepper and beet, remnants of the nucellus are persistent; this residual, persistent nucellus is the perisperm.

The nucellus is a diploid (2n) tissue, so perisperm is diploid, whereas endosperm develops from the primary endosperm nucleus formed by triple fusion and is therefore triploid (3n).

∴ Perisperm differs from endosperm in being a diploid tissue (both store food).
