Ques. 1AIPMT 2008

Earthworms have no skeleton but during burrowing the anterior end becomes turgid and acts as a hydraulic skeleton. It is due to:

  1. coelomic fluid
  2. gut peristalsis
  3. blood
  4. setae

Answer

(1) coelomic fluid

Solution

The earthworm is a coelomate animal, and its true coelom, divided by septa into segmental compartments, is filled with coelomic fluid.

During burrowing, contraction of the body-wall muscles presses on this incompressible coelomic fluid, making the anterior end turgid and rigid, so it works as a hydraulic skeleton.

Setae only help in gripping the soil, and blood and gut peristalsis play no part in this.
