Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 3 April (Evening Shift)

If the probability that the random variable X takes the value x is given by P(X = x) = k(x + 1)3-x, x = 0, 1, 2, 3, , where k is a constant, then P(X 3) is equal to

  1. 19
  2. 827
  3. 727
  4. 49

Answer

(1) 19

Solution

The total probability is 1:

k [1 + 2 ( 13 ) + 3 ( 13 )2 + ] = 1

∵ 1 + 2r + 3r2 + = 1(1 - r)2 for |r| < 1,

k 1 (1 - 13 )2 = 1

⇒ 9k4 = 1

⇒ k = 49

Hence

P(X 3) = 1 - [P(0) + P(1) + P(2)]

= 1 - 49 [1 + 23 + 39 ]

= 1 - 49 2

= 19
