Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

The appearance of colour in solid alkali metal halides is generally due to

  1. interstitial positions
  2. F-centres
  3. Schottky defect
  4. Frenkel defect

Answer

(2) F-centres

Solution

As per NCERT, when alkali metal halides are heated in the vapour of the alkali metal, anionic sites are left vacant and are occupied by unpaired electrons (metal excess defect).

These anionic sites occupied by unpaired electrons are called F-centres; they absorb visible light and impart colour, e.g. excess Na makes NaCl yellow, excess Li makes LiCl pink and excess K makes KCl violet.
