Ques. 1NEET 2013 (Karnataka)

Which one is the incorrect statement with regards to the importance of pedigree analysis?

  1. It confirms that DNA is the carrier of genetic information
  2. It helps to trace the inheritance of a specific trait
  3. It confirms that the trait is linked to one of the autosome
  4. It helps to understand whether the trait in question is dominant or recessive

Answer

(1) It confirms that DNA is the carrier of genetic information

Solution

As per NCERT, the analysis of traits in several generations of a family is called pedigree analysis; the inheritance of a particular trait is represented in the family tree over generations.

It therefore helps to trace the inheritance of a specific trait and to find whether the trait is dominant or recessive, and autosomal or sex-linked.

That DNA is the genetic material was proved by experiments such as those of Avery, MacLeod and McCarty and of Hershey and Chase, not by pedigree analysis.

∴ Statement (1) is incorrect.
