The contraceptive ‘Saheli’

  1. blocks estrogen receptors in the uterus, preventing eggs from getting implanted
  2. increases the concentration of estrogen and prevents ovulation in females
  3. is an IUD
  4. is a post-coital contraceptive

Answer

(1) blocks estrogen receptors in the uterus, preventing eggs from getting implanted

Solution

Saheli (centchroman) is an oral contraceptive pill for females developed by CDRI, Lucknow; it contains a non-steroidal preparation and is a ‘once a week’ pill.

It acts as an anti-estrogen: it blocks the estrogen receptors in the uterus, so the uterine lining does not become receptive and the fertilised egg cannot get implanted.

It is taken orally on a regular schedule, it is neither an IUD nor a post-coital (emergency) contraceptive, and it does not raise estrogen level to stop ovulation.
