Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

What is the fate of the male gametes discharged in the synergid?

  1. One fuses with the egg, other(s) fuse(s) with synergid nucleus.
  2. One fuses with the egg and other fuses with central cell nuclei.
  3. One fuses with the egg, other(s) degenerate(s) in the synergid.
  4. All fuse with the egg.

Answer

(2) One fuses with the egg and other fuses with central cell nuclei.

Solution

As per NCERT, the pollen tube releases the two male gametes into the cytoplasm of the synergid.

One male gamete fuses with the nucleus of the egg cell (syngamy), forming the diploid zygote, while the other moves towards the two polar nuclei in the central cell and fuses with them (triple fusion), forming the triploid primary endosperm nucleus.

∴ One fuses with the egg and the other with the central cell nuclei (double fertilisation).
