Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

The correct order of the mobility of the alkali metal ions in aqueous solution is

  1. Rb+ > K+ > Na+ > Li+
  2. Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Rb+
  3. Na+ > K+ > Rb+ > Li+
  4. K+ > Rb+ > Na+ > Li+

Answer

(1) Rb+ > K+ > Na+ > Li+

Solution

As per NCERT, the alkali metal ions are highly hydrated, and the smaller the ion, the greater its extent of hydration.

So the extent of hydration is Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Rb+, and the hydrated ionic radius follows the same order, Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Rb+.

A larger hydrated ion moves more slowly in solution, the mobility order is reversed.

∴ Ionic mobility: Rb+ > K+ > Na+ > Li+
