Ques. 1NEET 2016 (Phase 1)

Which of the following structures is homologous to the wing of a bird ?

  1. Wing of a Moth
  2. Dorsal fin of a Shark
  3. Flipper of Whale
  4. Hindlimb of Rabbit

Answer

(3) Flipper of Whale

Solution

The wing of a bird is a modified forelimb.

⇒ As per NCERT, the forelimbs of whales, bats, cheetah and human share similar anatomical structure (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals and phalanges) — they are homologous.

∴ The flipper of a whale (forelimb) is homologous to the wing of a bird.

∵ Wing of a moth is analogous, a shark's dorsal fin is not a limb, and a rabbit's hindlimb is not a forelimb.
