Thermal Properties of Matter

NEET 2016 (Phase 2)MCQMediumNot asked in last 5 yrs+4−1
Ques. 1NEET 2016 (Phase 2)

Two identical bodies are made of a material for which the heat capacity increases with temperature. One of these is at 100 , while the other one is at 0 . If the two bodies are brought into contact, then, assuming no heat loss, the final common temperature is

  1. 50
  2. more than 50
  3. less than 50 but greater than 0
  4. 0

Answer

(2) more than 50

Solution

Heat lost by the hot body = heat gained by the cold body

100 C dT = 0 C dT

Suppose = 50 : the hot body cools through 100 50 , where C is larger, so it gives out more heat than the cold body needs to warm through 0 50 , where C is smaller.

The extra heat raises the common temperature above 50 .

On observing light from three different stars P, Q and R, it was found that intensity of violet colour is maximum in the spectrum of P, the intensity of green colour is maximum in the spectrum of R and the intensity of red colour is maximum in the spectrum of Q. If TP, TQ and TR are the respective absolute temperatures of P, Q and R, then it can be concluded from the above observations that

  2. TP < TQ < TR
  3. TP > TQ > TR
  4. TP > TR > TQ
