Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

Increase in temperature of a gas filled in a container would lead to :

  1. increase in its kinetic energy
  2. decrease in intermolecular distance
  3. decrease in its pressure
  4. increase in its mass

Answer

(1) increase in its kinetic energy

Solution

As per NCERT (kinetic theory), the average kinetic energy of a gas molecule is proportional to absolute temperature:

KE = 32kBT

⇒ When T increases, the kinetic energy of the gas increases.

In a closed container the volume is fixed, so the intermolecular distance does not decrease, the pressure increases (p T) and the mass stays the same.
