Ques. 1NEET 2016 (Phase 2)

A rigid ball of mass m strikes a rigid wall at 60 and gets reflected without loss of speed as shown in the figure. The value of impulse imparted by the wall on the ball will be : [figure]

  1. mV
  2. 2 mV
  3. mV2
  4. mV3

Answer

(1) mV

Solution

The ball makes 60 with the normal (dotted line) both before and after striking the wall.

The component of velocity along the wall (V 60 ) remains unchanged, while the component along the normal reverses, from V 60 towards the wall to V 60 away from the wall.

Impulse equals the change in momentum, so

J = mV 60 - (-mV 60 )

J = 2mV 60 = 2mV 12 = mV
